The play is introduced to the audience by Tom as a memory play, based on his recollections. Tom's father left the family long ago, and his mother, Amanda, remains stuck in an idealized past. Tom works in a factory, doing his best to support his family while dreaming of a life far away. Amanda is obsessed with finding a suitor for Laura, who spends most of her time with her glass collection and the victrola, far from the real world.  When Tom announces plans to bring his friend Jim home for dinner one night, Amanda's hopes and dreams for the future seem, for the first time, to be within reach.
